“Why Can’t I See God?”

Honestly, there are things in life that make us question God’s love for us. One question I’ve heard from at least two of my friends is, “Why can’t I see God?” When you love someone, you want to see the person, right? So, “Why can’t I see God?”

Waking as I do every morning to the annoying buzz of the 5 a.m. alarm clock telling me to “Get up and go to work or that house you just bought will belong to someone else,” I slowly reach over and turn it off. With a deep breath and sigh, still laying there debating how I could get away with calling in sick, but can't think of a good enough excuse that hasn't been used a million times before, I roll myself out of bed. Stumbling in the dark to the bathroom for my morning makeover of morning breath, messy hair, and bloodshot eyes, with a click of the light switch I’m once again staring at the same face I have for 46 years.

I’ve always been a person who just went to work, paid my bills, went to sleep and repeated the day prior.  Last December it just hit me how I’ve been running in place by paying for my homes, credit cards and cars minimum monthly payments.  It’s what my parents did, my neighbors did, my friends and everyone on television does as well.  It’s just what we do and the powerful credit card companies, lending agencies and television have us all programmed to think that this is normal.

This question from the guy in the Wal*Mart parking lot or at the Chevron station just off the freeway usually makes the butterflies in my stomach go into cardiac arrest, but this time, I just had to laugh. Driving along Canyon Street in Boulder, Colorado, I saw the usual unkempt guy holding the usual cardboard sign, but with the unusual black-marker letters: “Honestly...I just need a beer.”
